Attachment styles

Four attachment styles. Same goal. Earned security.

Attachment research uses two dials: an anxiety dial ("are they leaving?") and an avoidance dial ("this is too close"). Where my dials sit gives me one of four vibes.

Attachment styles are a spectrum. They change over time, and even day to day. The goal is moving toward secure, but every human ebbs and flows along it. That's as normal as gaining a pound or growing out my nails. And these cards are patterns, not a diagnosis. Nobody here is a licensed practitioner reading my life.

Secure: Aleksandr, a blonde articulated collector doll in a pink sequin outfit, sealed in a clear blister with her pink teddy bear against a printed loft backdrop; an open padlock on a shield, a heart-sealed envelope and tin-can telephones in the side pockets; her name as enamel letter charms on a gold necklace chain in a bubble crowning the top.

Secure

Both dials low

I can be close and still be me.

Level-up: I get to let consistency count as chemistry.

Anxious: Milo, a blond curly-haired articulated collector doll in a pink knit cardigan and pyjamas, frowning at his phone, sealed in a clear blister with Mochi the tabby cat and an open book against a printed couch backdrop; a phone of unanswered texts, a BREATHE mug and a tangled charger with heart charms in the side pockets; MILO as enamel charms on a gold bracelet crowning the top.

Anxious-Preoccupied

Anxiety dial up

Distance can feel like danger, so I want to close the gap fast.

Level-up: I can breathe through the gap, then say what I need.

Dismissive-avoidant: Soren, a South Asian articulated collector doll in a leather jacket and sunglasses, leaning back in his wheelchair with one hand raised, sealed in a clear blister against a printed nocturnal architectural loft backdrop with wheels resting flush on the bottom rim; a tablet reading Can we talk about us?, a countdown timer and noise-cancelling headphones in the side pockets; SOREN as enamel charms on a gold bracelet crowning the top.

Dismissive-Avoidant

Avoidance dial up

Closeness can feel like too much, so I want to go quiet or get busy.

Level-up: I can stay in the conversation and share one small true thing.

Open Dismissive-Avoidant →
Fearful-avoidant: Vesper, a Black articulated collector doll with Coca-Cola red coils, a magenta streak and tattoos, lying back with their phone and a hand at their mouth, sealed in a clear blister against a printed bedroom backdrop; a phone of unanswered messages, a brass Newton's cradle and a black hooded vest with a broken-heart patch in the side pockets; VESPER as enamel charms on a gold necklace crowning the top.

Fearful-Avoidant

Both dials up

I want closeness, and it can also feel unsafe, so I swing.

Level-up: I can go slow with people who feel safe. A therapist can really help here.
